What's right with this picture? Everything -- except he should have a whole lot more of them, and Andre Braugher should be a household name rather than an "Oh, yeah! Him!"
Adding to the bittersweet victory of Braugher's Emmy win for Thief is that damn near nobody watched this 6-episode miniseries on FX this past spring. It was pretty relentless in terms of its violence and pessimistic naturalism. Characters were lucky if they made it from one episode to another, and being played by a major star was no guarantee of survival.
The subplot of Braugher's character having to cope with a 14-year-old stepdaughter could have been tedious were it not for the amazing interplay between Braugher and the actress playing the stepdaughter: Mae Whitman. You know, Ann from Arrested Development.
Her? Most definitely. And she's freaking fantastic. She's able to match Braugher in intensity, and a particularly nasty scene near the end of the series practically had me holding my breath due to the tension and distrust between the two of them.
Of course, what I'd truly pay good money to see is an intense-off between Braugher and Samuel L. Jackson. Who would win? Us, the viewers.
